Hello Olga,

Thank you for sending me the newspaper.  When I get to Carmen Ramirez, I will be glad to send you all the photos I have of her.  I will be writing what I have been told mostly by Aunt Polly and Lilian Diehl.  I will welcome any additional information you have and will add it to the account.

I have seen the wedding rings of my grandparents (I don't have them with me).  They have engraved on the inside their initials and a date:  C. E. R. for Carmen Elisa Ramirez with the date May 19, 1915 in the larger ring.  A. M. D. T. for Alfred Martinus David Tjon Akien with the date May 19, 1915 in the smaller ring.

What I think happened is that perhaps they met in Paramaribo around 1910.  They started to live together, Uncle Willy was born in 1912, Aunt Aida was born in 1914, the divorce became final in 1914, they married in 1915, then Aunt Celia was born in 1916, Aunt Polly in 1918, and my mother Sonja in 1922.  I believe that in order for the legal status of the 2 older children be normalized, Opa (that is what we called Alfred) had to go through the legal procedure of a formal adoption because he and Carmen were not married when they were born.  I am not sure of this, but it is my theory.

It would be interesting to find out when Carmen went from Curacao to Suriname.  Also, I know that Olga was born in 1906, stayed with Carmen and grew up with her and Opa.  The other 2 older sisters (born in 1903 and 1905) - Elvia & Diana - I don't remember right now which was the older, but I have it written down somewhere - remained with their father, Mr. Meyer (??).  I am writing all this from memory.

Can you tell me on what page of the 6 you sent me is the divorce notice of Carmen?  I don't know any Dutch.

Thank you,
Michelle
