Kenswil:
de naam werd gegeven aan kinderen van de vrije Sally of Sara Monsanto. Sally Monsanto was vanaf haar geboorte in 1792/3 al vrij. Ze was een dochter van Hanna (later Anna) van Monsanto en waarschijnlijk David Nunes Monsanto. Sally en haar broers ontvingen enige vorm van onderwijs en konden lezen en schrijven. Hun moeder Hanna was tot 1803 slavin en kon niet lezen of schrijven.

Ik vermoedt, dat Wilco Hendrik Wilkens (blank of kleurling weet ik niet)de vader van deze kinderen was, want op 30. sept. 1815 bepaald de moeder van Sally, Anna van Monsanto, deze man tot executeur van haar testament. Hij tekende volgens mij ook de aangifte van de volkstelling van Anna en haar kinderen in het jaar 1811, omdat Anna niet kon schrijven.

In het wijkregister van 1845 wonen op het adres Hoogstraat 307, oud nummer
792 b
o.a. Sally Monsanto, 52 jaar oud
samen met
Kenswil, Pierre Henry schrijver 32 jaar oud
Kenswil, Wilhelmina Jacoba 31 jaar oud
Kenswil, Jeannette Susanne, 28 jaar oud
Kenswil, Hendrik Klaas, 2,5 jaar oud
Kenswil, Willem Pierre, 2 maanden oud

Alle Kenswil in Suriname gaan terug op de kinderen van Sally Monsanto. Een van de Wilkens had de voornaam Unico, deze naam is zeer zelden in Suriname, later wordt een familielid van de Monsanto ook Unico gedoopt. Dat wijst sterk op een familieband met de
oorspronkelijk blanke Wilkens.

In het boek van de manumissies zie je, dat ene W.J. Kenswil in 1862 gehuwd was met ene D.A. Emanuels. Of dat de boven genoemde Wilhelmina Jacoba was of iemand uit de latere generatie kan ik niet uit het blote hoofd zeggen.
