Toon trok veel op met zijn twee jaar oudere broer Chris. Ze deden allebei aan duivesport ('s zondags moesten ze altijd thuisblijven tot de duiven binnen waren). Ook deden ze aan fotografie; aan hen hebben we een aantal familieportretten te
danken. Wekelijks gingen ze bij elkaar schaken; ze waren lid van een club en hebben diverse prijzen gewonnen.
