    Marie Cogley Kelm, age 90, of Grinnell died on October 14, 2017, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

    A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall of St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery north of Grinnell.

    Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell or The Brownell
    Emergency and Trauma Center at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Condolences may be shared with her family online at www.smithfh.com.

    Avis was born on December 12, 1926 on the family farm in Grinnell, Iowa to John and Clara Cogley. She graduated in 1944 from Grinnell High School and then attended Drake University. She taught in the rural schools and the Malcom school district.

    On August 4, 1946, Avis was united in marriage to LaVerne Charles Kelm. Avis and LaVerne had 4 daughters and were married 52 years before LaVerne passed in 1998.

    LaVerne and Avis were owners of LC Kelm Plumbing in Grinnell for over 40 years. Avis was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was active in the Lydia Circle. She belonged to the Historical and Literary Club for many years. In addition, she was very active in her Malcom Worthwhile Club. Avis loved gardening, reading and traveling. She enjoyed playing cards, attending plays and musical events.

    Preceding her death was her husband, her parents, her brothers Jim Cogley and Clarence Cogley, her sisters, Eleanor Mason, Barbara Danskin, Bernice Mithelman, and Betty Bryan. Her granddaughter, Terri Lynn Cline also preceded her in death.

    Survivors include her daughters, Lynn (Terry) Cline of Grinnell, IA; Paula Devereux of Grinnell, IA; Sally Kelm of Tama, IA; June Waage (Scott) of Naples, FL; her grandchildren Peter (Juliann) Cline of West Des Moines, IA; Amy (Jason) Levang of Des Moines, IA; Julie (Brian) Sharar of Modesto, CA; Jill (Em) Danh of Flagsta?, AZ; Daniel (Randi) of Bolivar MO; Ryan Waage of Kansas City, MO and Lauren Waage of Atlanta, GA. Seven great grandchildren survive including, Cody Sharar, Shania Sharar, Sydney Cline, Molly Cline, Jacob Levang, Sam Levang, Jacob Devereux, and Averi Devereux. Surviving sisters and brothers include, Joan Hopkinson of Savannah, GA; Marilyn Copeland of Je?erson, IA; Keith Cogley of Colfax, IA; Pat Lang of Grinnell, IA; Allen Cogley of Athens, AL and Roy Cogley of Green Valley, AZ.
