    Jean Ezéchiel De Bruyn, Emile Clément en Emile Geerinckx richten hier in 1875 een katoenfabriek op, die vanaf 20 juli 1894 onder de naam La Dendre katoen spint, verft, bleekt en apprenteert. Het drietal is van 'goeden katholieke huize' en de Dendermondenaren spreken al snel over 't katholiek fabriek. Zo staat er in het arbeidsreglement dat Godslastering, zedeloosheid, zingen of andere onbetaamlijkheden, zowel buiten als binnen de fabriek, ten strengste verboden zijn. Paternalistische fabrieksdirecteuren zijn eind 19de eeuw geen uitzondering. Zij willen goed bedoeld de arbeidersklasse verheffen, maar hebben er geen idee van hoe die mensen dagelijks leven. Sommige ondernemers gaan daarin zo ver, dat ze hele woongemeenschappen rond hun bedrijven laten bouwen met alle mogelijke voorzieningen. Maar dat is tot mislukken gedoemd, de arbeiders zien zich niet aan het handje van de directeur lopen om ontwikkeld te worden.
    La Dendre heeft het uiteindelijk volgehouden tot 29 maart 1938, toen de crisis te hard toesloeg om de productie overeind te houden.
