  Citaat: "Amsterdam den 26 May. In brieven van Canton in China, van den 14 december de vorigen jaars, wordt gemeld, dat OIC Schip Vasco da Gama, Kapitein H. Barends, aldaar behouden gearriveert was en binnen weinig dagen de reis na het vaderland weder stond aan te nemen; doch het schip Canton, Kapt. Dirk Peek, was aldaar ter dier tyd nog niet aangekomen; het laatste berigt dat men daar van had was, dat het zelve den 21 september reeds in de chineesche zee was geweest, met het deensche schip Juliana Maria, en dat twee dagen daar na een zwaren storm was ontstaan, waar in het gemelde deensche schip masteloos en zoodanig gesteld was geworden, dat het zelve, vervolgens te Canton aangekomen zynde, moest worden afgekeurd;"
