Anna v Alen (Annie) zat van 11 sept 1906 tot 23 dec 1909 op internaat Mariakroon (te Kuilenburg=Culemborg) ), Lena was daar vanaf dezelfde tijd tot 10 april 1909. Vanwege de grootte van het gezin dat boven het restaurant woonde werden steeds de oudste kinderen naar een kostschool gestuurd. Anna heeft feitelijk totdat ze onderwijzers was op kostschool gezeten. Mede hierdoor had ze geen ervaring in het huishouden (alleen de fijne franse keuken, zodat ze voor haar Frans een ei kon bakken maar iets anders ging blijkbaar niet) zodat ze in haar eigen huishouden een meisje intern had die op de zolder woonde. Omdat ze op de kostschool niet mocht snoepen werd dit later ingehaald. Zo had eenieder op het "schooltuintje" een grasperkje waaronder het snoeptrommeltje verborgen was. Opa kon haar later niet beter verwennen dan door een doos bonbons mee te nemen.
Met haar huwelijk betrokken ze een pand in de Zwarte paardenstraat, boven de werkplaats van het aannemersbedrijf van haar man.
