Op 16-3-1936 verhuist hij door de crisis op zoek naar werk uit Amsterdam naar achterstraat 27A te Lunteren, gemeente Ede. Het huis is een onderdeel van een oude smidse die sinds enkele jaren voor verhuur wordt aangeboden. Zijn tante Jacoba Maria (Kuin) woont daar al enige maanden met haar man en Henk trekt daarbij in. Volgens overlevering werkt hij op een kippenfarm. Daar komt hij zijn toekomstige vrouw Leur, Theodora Antonia (Duitse, wel Nederlandse nationaliteit) tegen die kindermeisje is bij de familie Philips (op PK staat Dienstbode en later "zonder"). De anekdote gaat dat zijn hospita 's ochtends de van de avondlunch weggeworpen plakjes worst (vervangen door de veel betere "left-overs" van de familie Philips) op de waslijn terugvond. Hij gaat 22-7-1937 weer terug naar Amsterdam, riouwstraat 119II.
