Hans Erik Gouwe (geboren op 28 april 1923) had op 23 september 1944, samen met twee vrienden, Adriaan van Haeringen en Chris Bakker, de auto van de familie - een Ford - naar Zwartsluis gebracht. De Duitsers waren bezig alle auto's te vorderen. In Zwartsluis hadden de jongens de auto overgedragen aan het verzet. Daar hoorden ze dat de Mastenbroekerpolder onder water gezet was en ze besloten waar mogelijk boeren de helpende hand te bieden bij het redden van het vee. Thuis in Lutten had moeder bericht gekregen dat het nu wat later zou worden. Haar man, dokter Gouwe, verbleef op dat moment in kamp Neu Brandenburg in Duitsland.

Terwijl de jongens terugfietsten naar huis, hadden enkele verzetslieden in Balkbrug het vuur geopend op een munitieschip, echter zonder enig effect. Gealarmeerde Duitsers arresteerden kort daarna het niets vermoedende drietal. Zij werden verdacht, gefouilleerd en meegenomen. Daar in Balkbrug, in het laantje van 't huis bij dr. Hartsuiker, werd Hans Erik van achteren neergeschoten. Zijn lichaam werd naar de openbare weg gesleept waar het ter afschrikking moest blijven liggen. De beide anderen werden meegenomen, Chris wist later nog te ontkomen, maar ook Adriaan is doodgeschoten. Direct na de moord op Hans Erik werd er huiszoeking gedaan in de dokterswoning in Lutten, gewelddadig, brutaal en intimiderend. Daarbij is ook Johannes Kosse uit Slagharen neergeschoten: hij kwam toevallig voorbij en trachtte te ontkomen. Mevrouw Gouwe legde de gebeurtenissen vast in een dagboek om haar man bij terugkeer uit Duitsland te kunnen laten lezen wat er precies was gebeurd.
