Deze relatie is een van de minder bekende geschiedenissen van de Van Brederodes, die nu is opgetekend door amateurhistoricus Walter van Zijderveld in het boek Opgaan, blinken en verzinken. Waarnemend burgemeester André Bonthuis van de gemeente Zederik nam het eerste exemplaar in ontvangst.

Het geslacht Van Brederode speelde een belangrijke rol in de strijd tegen Spanje in de 16e en 17e eeuw. Reinoud III en zijn zoon Hendrik III speelden daarin een prominente rol. Privé kende Reinoud III een turbulent leven.
Reinoud III had, niet ongebruikelijk voor dit tijd, maîtresses bij wie hij bastaardkinderen verwekte. Die bastaards werden gewoon erkend, maar wel zonder erfrecht. Uit één van zijn relaties ontstond de bastaardtak Van Brederode van Bolswaert. De weduwnaar Reinoud III (49) ontmoette op een feest de beeldschone Catharina Goossensdr. Van Holten (18). Hij viel voor haar, zij niet voor hem. Een ordinaire ontvoering volgde (fraai gezegd: zij werd geschaakt) en Reinoud zette haar gevangen. Uiteindelijk beloofde hij met haar te trouwen, waarop zij toehapte. Van trouwen kwam het echter nooit.
Behalve een huis in Vianen, kreeg Catharina ook een stuk grond (middelwaard) in Lexmond. Daar ontstond de nieuwe familienaam die was ontleend aan de Bolswaard, een eiland in de Lek tegenover het dorp Lexmond.
