Hij is afkomstig van De Westen en destijds de rijkste boer van Texel. Alle katholieke Texelse boeren stammen van deze Teunis Huijghsz af; natuurlijk is inmiddels zijn landbezit ook in evenveel stukjes versnipperd. Van zijn afstammelingen in de rechte mannelijke lijn, die dus later Smit heetten, is een deel omstreeks 1800 naar Hamburg verdwenen; dit waren koopvaardijkapiteins.
