Griekenland wordt in 1832 onafhankelijk verklaard door het Congres van Londen. Er werd gezocht naar een koning. De eerste Koning van Griekenland was Otto I; prins Otto van Beieren, zoon van de filhelleen Lodewijk I en diens vrouw Theresia uit het Huis Wittelsbach.
Otto blijft kinderloos. Vanaf 1843 groeit de ontevredenheid onder de bevolking. In 1862 doet Otto afstand van de troon. Weer wordt een koning gezocht: dit wordt Christiaan Willem Ferdinand Adolf George prins van Denemarken. Hij regeert als George I van Griekenland.
