Gijsbert heeft veel onenigheid met de abdij van Mariënweerd, maar ook met Johan van Beusichem, die vlakbij veel land bezit. De vader van Gijsbert was eerder gedood door de grootvader van Johan. Om de strijd te beëindigen wordt een verzoeningshuwelijk gesloten tussen Gijsbert en Elisabeth van Beusichem, de halfzuster van Johan.
Gijsbert krijgt later onmin met de Heren Van Buren, over hun goederen in Beusichem. Ook nu volgt een verzoeningshuwelijk. Dit keer tussen Gijsberts dochter Mabelia en Alard IV van Buren.
