Martinus SCHUIL is geboren te Harlingen op 26 april 1842 als zoon van Jouke Boltom SCHUIL (1) en Acke ZIJLSTRA (2). Op 08 juli 1869 trouwde hij te Franeker met Martha van der MEULEN (3). Zij kregen drie kinderen, twee meisjes Ake SCHUIL (4) en Anna Cornelia SCHUIL (5) en een zoon Jouke Broer SCHUIL (6).

Martinus SCHUIL studeerde van 1859 tot 1862 muziek aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Brussel bij o.a. François Joseph FÉTIS (7) en Joseph DUPONT (8). Tijdens zijn studie periode speelde hij als violist in het orkest van het Théâtre de la Monnaie (Nederlands: de Munt, nu Koninklijke Muntschouwburg).

Na zijn studie in 1862 woont Martinus te Leeuwarden op de hoek van de Sacramentstraat K 18. Hij geeft van 1862 tot 1874 concerten te Franeker en les voor viool, piano en begeleiding. Martinus is van 1864 tot 1872 stads muziekmeester te Harlingen. Hij is daar tevens organist in de Nederlands Hervormde gemeente. In 1875 verhuisde Martinus, met zijn gezin, naar Voorstraat 24 te Harlingen, op de hoek van de Vismarkt. Hij kocht in 1879 het huis Noorderhaven 102 te Harlingen. Martinus richtte in Harlingen de zangvereniging "Euterpe" op. Martinus was tevens dirigent van de schutterij-muziek en na de opheffing van deze schutterij dirigeerde Martinus het pas opgerichte Stedelijk Muziekkorps. Hij was tevens organist in de Doopsgezinde kerk.

Martinus componeerde verscheidene cantates, koren en operettes, waarvoor hij zelf ook het libretto schreef. Met name zijn operette´s trokken de aandacht. Zijn kinderoperette De Woudkoningin is bijvoorbeeld vertaald in het Frans (La Reine des bois), Duits (Die Waldkönigin) en Engels (The sylvan queen).

Martinus SCHUIL is overleden te Drachten op 22 maart 1899.
