Lodewijk Nicolaas Went is op 4 januari 1919 geboren. Hij gaat in 1937 te Leiden scheikunde studeren. Na de sluiting van de Universiteit in 1940 en een onderduikperiode vervolgt Loe Went zijn opleiding op het fysiologisch laboratorium te Amsterdam, waar hij in 1945 afstudeert. In 1948 promoveert hij te Utrecht.98 Tot 1954 werkt hij in Jakarta waar hij als lector biochemie verbonden is aan de medische faculteit. Vandaar vertrekt hij naar Jamaica waar hij als lector chemical pathology onderzoek doet naar erfelijke bloedziekten. In 1960 wordt hij hoofd van het laboratorium van de neurologie en ontmoet daar dr. G.W. Bruyn. In 1963 wordt hij medewerker op de afdeling anthropogenetica. In 1976 volgt een benoeming als lector, later hoogleraar anthropogenetica. Bruyn ziet op de afdeling neurologie veel Huntingtonpatiënten, Went start met het bijeenbrengen van de stamboomgegevens en het doen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Samen met Bruyn, H. Petit (Lille) en A. Barbeau (Montréal) geeft Went de aanzet tot de oprichting van de International Research Group on Huntington’s chorea in 1967. Went en Bruyn nemen samen het initiatief voor de oprichting van de Vereniging van Huntington. Tot november 1998 is hij lid geweest van de WAR van de Vereniging van Huntington.
