In 1904 volgde hij Van Swinderen op als Commissaris. Degelijke regent, die goede contacten had met de burgemeesters in zijn provincie. Stichter van een gouverneursdynastie: zowel zijn zoon als twee van zijn kleinzoons waren Commissaris van de Koningin.
