Deze Mezach Mezach, zoals hij staat ingeschreven in de burgerlijke stand, maar werd genoemd als Mezach Hendriks Mezach, had evenals zijn vader een voorliefde voor het boerenbedrijf. Hij was een pientere jongen en bezat ook nog een goede koopmansgeest. In zijn jonge jaren was men in de Veenkoloniën druk doende met turfafgravingen en landontginningen. In die tijd werd veel afgegraven gronden ter pachting aan geboden. Een uitdaging voor jonge mannen, die na deze gronden bouwrijp hadden gemaakt hierop eenboerderij zouden kunnen beginnen. Mezach zag hierin ook wel toekomst. Omdit doel te bereiken 'verhuurde' hij zich als gruttersknecht bij een koopman te Stadskanaal. Hier leerde hij de kunst om door handel en ruiling van goederen en waren. meer te verdienen dan, met het ruwe harde grondwerk.
Op 25 jarige leeftijd trouwde hij met de 31 jarige Harmina Moolhuizen. Harmina had tot haar 12e jaar samen met haar moeder in Muntendam gewoond. Door het huwelijk van haar moeder met de timmerman Coenraad Moolhuizen, kreeg zij diens achternaam en verhuisde ze naar Stadskanaal. Harmina en Mezach trouwden op donderdag 20 mei 1869 te Stadskanaal. Bij dit huwelijk was als getuige aanwezig ene Lucas Dopper (logementhouder te Stadskanaal). Op zaterdag 10 december 1870 werd hun eerste zoon geboren, die de naam Coenraad kreeg. Het kind had echter geen levenskansen en overleed nogdezelfde dag. Later werden er nog drie jongens geboren.
Vader Mezach was inmiddels voor zichzelf begonnen met een winkel in grutten en koloniale waar. In hetzelfde pand (zie foto 2), had hij nog een ruimte vrij gemaakt voor een café, waar een sterke borrel kon worden geschonken. De arbeiders die zijn grond bouwrijp maakten konden in het vervolg geheel bij hem terecht voor hun natje en hun droogje. De plaats waar hij zijn boerderij en overige zaken runde stond even ten noorden van de plaats waar nu de watertoren te Stadskanaal staat. Ook heeft hij nog een plaats landbouwgrond ontgonnen in de 2e Exloërmond, waar later (1906) zijn zoon Willem ging boeren.
