Notes about Anthonij Cornelis Berwald

Op 07.09.1873 vertrekt hij, 12 jaar oud, als scheepsjongen op het barkschip "Grondwet" naar Batavia.
Hij komt pas na enige jaren terug van zijn eerste reis.
In 1873 werd hij lid van de "Slavenkas",die in 1734 werd gesticht om zeelui vrij te kopen van de Algerijnse zeerovers.
Deze toestand duurde tot het eind van de 18e eeuw, daarna kon er worden gesproken van een soort pensioenfonds waaruit aan de zeelui alsmede aan de weduwen periodieke uitkeringen werden verstrekt.
Zijn weduwe J.W.de Winter genoot vanaf 1934 een uitkering uit die kas van f 70 per week (een zeer hoog bedrag voor die tijd, een gemiddeld weekloon was destijds f 20-22 per week.
Na haar overlijden in 1941 was er geen zeeman of weduwe van een zeeman te vinden die vanuit Zierikzee gevaren had en in Zierikzee zijn/haarlaatste levensjaren sleet (dit was een eis om een uitkering uit die kas te krijgen).Zie art Nieuwe Haagse Courant dd 11.04.1959 en Het Vrije Volk dd 17.11.1962
Op 8 april 1892 redde hij met 2 andere mannen een man, die wegens het verbreken van een liefdesrelatie een eind aan zijn leven wilde maken door in de haven te springen.
Het lukte hen om de man die reeds in gevaarlijke toestand verkeerde in een boot te trekken

Toon was werkzaam in de Grote Vaart en het Loodswezen.
