Notes about Lambertus Bonder

In de Provinciale Drentsche en Asser courant van 16 januari 1925 lezen we:
"OUDEMOLEN. DE BOERDERIJ BENKOELEN", Er zijn vele huizen en boerderijen, die een naam hebben. Onwillekeurig vraagt de voorbijganger: Waarom zou dat zoo heeten. zonder zich den tijd te gunnen of gelegenheid te hebben, er naar te vragen. Zoo hebben we ook aan den Rijksstraatweg van Vries naar Assen, het Landgoed ,,Benkoelen", een mooie, ruim aangelegde boerderij, met omgelegen landerijen. Er staan nu, in de nabijheid langs den weg wel meer huizen, maar in 1853 was daar niets anders als heide en daar in de verte slechts Rhee en Nieuw-Ubbena. Gelukkig reed de heer Franciskus Lieftinck, de leverancier van de tabak in ’t Oude Lantschap, in grof grijze zakken, met ’t Wapen van Drenthe. Toevallig hoorde hij, dat die heidegronden daar te koop waren. Door ’n zeer voordeeligen inkoop op de beurs te Amsterdam, had hij daar, ongedacht, een winstje gemaakt van dertig duizend gulden. Als ik dat veld eens kocht en liet ontginnen, en er een mooie boerderij op liet bouwen, hadden we genot, voordeel en een open brandkast, zonder veel belasting. Zoo gezegd zoo gedaan. De ontginning begon en het gebouw verrees. Nu nog een naam, en alles is in orde. We hebben die bezitting verkregen met een vrucht van Benkoelen, daarom is "Benkoelen" de meest gepaste naam. Op de groote, zware hekpalen, kon iedereen dien naam in gouden letters lezen. De heer Lieftinck had wel kennis van tabak, maar niet van Drentsche heidevelden, doch was zoo verstandig om een flinken boerenzoon uit de buurt te nemen, als bedrijfsleider, en een degelijke boerendochter als meid, om de huis houding en melkerij te besturen. De heer Lieftinck en familie hebben vele aangename dagen op "Benkoelen" doorgebracht en namen steeds aangename herin neringen mee naar Groningen, omdat er steeds een goede verstandhouding bestond, tusschen heer en dienaar, gegrond op wel verdiend wederzijdse vertrouwen. In 1880 is "Benkoelen" wegens versterf, verkocht voor f 4000 aan den heer Birnie, Indisch Ambtenaar, die er enkele jaren gewoond en het toen verkocht heeft aan een landbouwer uit Slochteren, Aalderik Hamminga. die er vele jaren de boerderij met goed gevolg heeft uitgeoefend, tot aan zijn sterven. De familie Hamminga heeft "Benkoelen" toen verkocht aan den heer Hoenderken van Noordlaren. die door zijn vruchten toont dat een Groningsche boer ook op Drentschen bodem ’n voordeelig bestaan kan vinden.
