Notes about Bartholomeus Hengst

Vader Bartholomeus (Bert?) was toen hij jong was, kleermaker geweest. Hij maakte als kleermaker
onder meer de kleding voor de brandersknechten. Hun tenue bestond uit 'n broek van dikke blauwe
katoen (onder de knieën bijeengebonden), 'n blauw baaien hemd, blauwe kousen. Soms daar overheen
een dikke pilo broek. Die kleding kostte fl.0.75 en men wilde dan vaak ook nog op afbetaling
kopen. Van die verdienste kon Bartholomeus Hengst geen gezin met 13 kinderen Hij was kleermaker
maar dat verdiende niet genoeg. Hij zocht een ander beroep en werd, zoals zovelen in die tijd,
verzekeringsagent. (Zijn zoon Cor heeft dat agentschap later overgenomen).
Als agent van de verzekeringsmaatschappij "Haarlem" was hij zelfstandig ondernemer. Vandaar ook
dat grootste huis van de straat. Boven in huis had hij z'n kantoor met een heel groot bureau. Hij
werkte elke dag tot ongeveer 15.00 uur buitenshuis. Daarna zat hij verder de hele dag op kantoor.
Hij at er ook (behalve 's zondags).
Volgens de overlevering was hij 'n stille man (zoon Cor was er wat bang van) hoewel uit brieven en
verhalen ook is gebleken dat hij heel joviaal en vrolijk kon zijn.
Volgens een acte uit 1874
werd Bartholomeus vrijgesteld van militaire dienst vanwege lichaamsgebreken.
