Een lichter was een klein schip die van grote schepen een deel van hun lading overnam, zodat deze grote schepen met de rest van hun lading over de ondiepten van de Zuiderzee naar Amsterdam konden varen. Deze ondiepten waren het Wieringer Vlaak, het Enkhuizerzand en Pampus. De naam Jeije Okkes komt als lichterschipper voor op de lijst van "van den Havenmeester Agter de Reede de Hors bewesten Texel, voor den jare 1767" en van 1772.
