Willem werkte eerst bij de Heidemij, wat later overging in de dienst uitvoerend werk (DUW), weer later werkte hij bij Hedeman. In zijn jonge jaren heeft hij, zoals velen uit het grensgebied, gesmokkeld. Waarschijnlijk heeft hij hiervoor nogeen keer in de gevangenis gezeten, maar dit is iets waar hij zelf liever niet over praatte, en zodoende weten wij het niet zo zeker. Om wat bij te verdienen maakte hij klompen, dit klompenmaken werd niet betaald met geld, maar hij kreegdan van de boer een extra stuk hout waarvan hij dan nog een paar klompen kon maken. Ze hadden een groot gezin en veel geld was er niet in de crisisjaren, zodat ze het wel zwaar hebben gehad.
