Maria (Rie) Neeft was 35 jaar toen ze ongeveer een half jaar na het einde van de oorlog op 22 november 1945 overleed. Zij heeft lange tijd in een wit en geel geschilderde ligtent gelegen op het erf aan de Kerkweg (later nummer 160). Haar jongere zus Nel en de andere kinderen mochten niet in het huisje komen. De jongens zwaaiden na hun werk gedag. De meisjes gingen wel eens stiekum naar binnen en speelden verstoppertje onder het bed van Rie of ze zaten op de rand van het huisje als de jongens het tentje naar de zon moesten draaien. Zo hadden ze een soort draaimolen totdat Rie riep data ze er draaierig van werd. Moeder en de pastoor kwamen wel in de ligtent. De pastoor bracht af en toe wat lekkers mee. Toen Rie een keer trek had in paling kwam hij die gratis brengen. Waarschijnlijk had Rie Neeft geen longtuberculose maar een andere vorm, omdat ontlasting en urine altijd door moeder in een kuil moesten worden gegooid, die speciaal voor dat doel was gegraven door vader. Er mochten geen etensresten van Rie worden gegeten, maar in het moeilijke laatste oorlogsjaar at moeder wel de restjes op. Na Rie's overlijden moesten kleren en laken worden weggegooid. De matras en de dekens werden ontsmet. De moeder van Rie, Maria Neeft-Diemeer, heeft een paar jaar later longtuberculose gekregen, maar weigerde in een ligtent te gaan liggen. Ze wilde een longoperatie in de Maria Stichting, maar die verliep rampzalig. De kinderen hebben in het ziekenhuis in Haarlem nog wel afscheid van haar kunnen nemen.
