Zijn vader Willem van Dijk, gedurende 36 jaar veldwachter in Breukelen, laat zijn oog vallen op het pand van slager De Lange aan de Achterstraat 160a. Een mooi plekje midden in het dorp. Hij sloopt het pand met uitzondering van de slachtplaatsen en laat er een woonhuis en een woonhuis met winkel bouwen door aannemer Vermeulen. Zoon Gijs van Dijk zette in de voormalige slachterij twee degelpersen en begon een drukkerij-boekbinderij. Op 1 april 1904 was Drukkerij G.van Dijk een feit.
