Het leven is een ongeneeslijke ziekte, wil een oud rijmpje zeggen: Doctor, Doctor shall I die? Yes, my child, and so shall I. Hier klinkt het zacht, ons lot in een knipoog verteld. Maar verplaats je dan in vader en moeder Dros, die in december 1912 in een tijdsbestek van veertien dagen hun Jannetje (1 jaar), Niesje (11), Trijntje (6), Jacob-Pieter (12) en Heintje (3) naar de begraafplaats van Oudeschild op Texel moesten brengen. Dysenterie. En eigen schuld, foeterden Texelaars, omdat Dros uit geloofsovertuiging de tussenkomst van de dokter niet toestond.

Acht jaar vóór het drama hadden ze al een kind verloren. En amper twaalf jaar erna overleed de moeder.
