Notes about Barend Cornelisz Snooij

Barend zal evenals een groot deel van zijn familie loods geweest zijn. Hij zal in die hoedanigheid ook VOC-schepen naar binnen en buiten hebben geloodst. Deze schepen waren verplicht een loods aan boord te nemen, omdat de Waddenzee dagelijks aan veranderingen onderhevig is: twee maal per dag perst de opkomende vloed zich door de zeegaten tussen de eilanden door de Waddenzee in en schuurt de ebstroom door de geulen tussen de zandbanken. De Rede van Texel was een beschutte ligplaats, maar de doorgang naar de Noordzee was gevaarlijk vaarwater voor wie er onbekend was.

Aan boord van elk VOC-schip waren altijd tenminste twee loodsen, die om beurten wacht moesten houden. Zij moesten niet alleeen op het vaarwater letten, maar er ook op toezien dat er geen vreemde schepen langszij kwamen. De loodsen gingen in het Kanaal van boord. Een enkele keer kwam het voor dat men door het slechte weer het schip niet kon verlaten en mee moest varen naar Kaap de Goede Hoop. De tocht van Texel naar de Kaap duurde gemiddeld 128 dagen; het schip ankerde vervolgens 110 dagen later op de rede van Batavia.
