Hij begon zijn loopbaan op Dijkmanshuizen 7 ('Theodorahoeve'), waar in 1804 Hendrikje Ariesd. Kooger zijn echtgenote werd. Het echtpaar Dekker/Kooger verhuisde rond 1806 naar Oosterweg 20, gelegen in de buurtschap Westerbuurt.

Jacob was met 60 schapen niet alleen schapenboer, maar had tot 1830 meest vijf runderen op stal. Hij beschikte over bijna vier ha eigen land.Tien jaar later had hij nog maar 30 schapen; drie koeien en twee schetters stonden op stal.
