Notes about Anton Beijen

In 1889 werd Anton benoemd tot burgemeester van Pernis. Dat was in die tijd nog een landelijke gemeente van zo'n 2000 inwoners, al kwamen de Rotterdamse havens geleidelijk dichterbij.
Anton Beijen was ongetrouwd. Hij stond in Pernis bekend als een zeer vermogend man, en onderstreepte dat door gulle giften voor verschillende doeleinden.
In de zomer van 1916 overleed Anton Beijen onverwacht. Hij werd 63 jaar oud.

De gemeente Pernis werd in 1934 bij Rotterdam gevoegd.
Na de oorlog werden enkele straten in het dorp vernoemd naar burgemeesters van de voormalige gemeente. Een van die straten is de Burgemeester Beyenstraat.
Die straat had beter Burgemeester Beijenstraat kunnen heten: Anton heette Beijen, hij schreef zelf zijn naam zo, en in zijn benoemingsbesluit werd ook de naam Beijen gebruikt.
