RELIGION: Methodist Episcopal (Southern)
Helped fund the Asbury Mission Schook for Creeks, which bur ned during the Civil
War (he rebuilt it with his own funds). He represented th e Creeks in Wahington
no less than 20 times. He urged the Creeks to educate them selves, for he knew
the Indian ways were coming to an end. In his business ven tures, he alweays
had European American employees.
In the 1860 census, there were less than 500 slaves in th e Creek nation. When
the Nation was broken up into individual land allottments , there were 4,600
people considered descendants of slaves. The initial appli cants for Freedman
(former slaves or their descendants considered members of t he Creek Nation)
nearly doubled this figure because of the inmigration of bl acks from
neighboring states (Arkansas, Missouri, etc.) Whites who m arried Creeks were
considered non-citizens (of the Creek Nation), even G.W. St idham's wife.
