Jan Uniken bekleedde, behalve een functie van kerkelijke aard, die van dijkrichter, waartoe hij vermoedelijk door de gezamenlijke participanten was aangesteld. Uniken placht in de volksmond te worden genoemd Jan Uinties, hetgeen uit enkele van deze stukken blijkt en wordt bevestigd door een brief van L. Grevelink aan Mr. P. Hofstede op Batinge d.d. 30 aug. 1813 (zie Mr. C.L. Kniphorst: Geschiedkundig overzicht van de verveningen in Drenthe, 1872. pag. 137).
