Notes about Hubertus Antonius Jacobs

Hubertus Antonius Jacobs was groentehandelaar en woonde met zijn gezin aan de Veerstraat 19 te Wageningen.
Vrij snel na de inval van de Duitsers was hij betrokken bij allerlei activiteiten die door het Naziregime verboden waren. Hij had onderduikers ondergebracht in het naast zijn woonhuis gelegen pakhuis ‘America’ en was lid van een verboden organisatie, de communistische partij.
In de zomer van 1942 dook Jacobs onder in Amsterdam. Toen de Duitsers ontdekten dat hij voortvluchtig was werden zijn vrouw en vijf zonen in gijzeling genomen en gevangen gehouden in de Koepel- gevangenis te Arnhem. Nadat Jacobs, begin augustus 1942, was gearresteerd werd zijn familie vrijgelaten.
In januari 1943 werd Jacobs overplaatst de ‘Deutsches Untersuchungs- und Strafgefängnis’ Wolvenplein te Utrecht, waar hij als onderzoeksgevangene te boek stond. In het voorjaar van 1943 werd hij overgeplaatst naar de ‘Deutsche Polizeigefängnis”’ aan de Alkemadelaan in Den Haag. ‘Het Oranjehotel’. Zijn burgerkleding en horloge werden hem ontnomen en opgestuurd naar zijn vrouw. Op dat moment werd Jacobs uitgedost in gevangenistenue en gedegradeerd tot ‘Schutzhäftling’, nummer 5670.
In het voorjaar van 1944 werd Jacobs overgebracht naar kamp Vught. Eind mei werd hij op transport gesteld maar Dachau, daar werd hij gevangene 69274 en dwangarbeider.
Op 9 november 1944 werd Jacobs overgebracht naar Bergen Belsen
Hubertus Antonius Jacobs overleed in Bergen Belsen op 9 januari 1945.
Pas in oktober 1946 kreeg de familie bericht van ‘Het Nederlandsche Roode Kruis afwikkeling concentratiekampen’ dat Hubertus Antonius Jacobs was overleden in kamp Bergen-Belsen.
