Woonde o.a. te Schiedam, Delft, Haarlem? en Amsterdam.
Werkte aan de aanleg van de spoorlijn Amsterdam-Rotterdam (opengesteld op 3 juni 1847) en aan het Suez-kanaal in Egypte (aangelegd tussen 1859 en 1869). Was treinmachinist op een locomotief van de Hollandsche Yzeren Spoorweg Maatschappij tussen Amsterdam en Rotterdam
Opende daarna (vermoedelijk 1868) een smederij en machinefabriek aan de Stormsteeg (verlengde van de Binnenbantammerstraat) te Amsterdam, waar hij 'een twintigtal knechts employeerde'. Zijn vrouw Johanna hield de loonadministratie bij en betaalde iedere zaterdag de weeklonen uit.
