Jan bleef ongetrouwd. Jan zijn grootste hobby was schilderen in de kunst. Zijn vader wilde dat hij slager zou worden. Zoals hij zei ,,Ik kan geen bloed zien". Jan werd opgeroepen om als dienstplichtige een opleiding te volgen voor onderofficier. Hij bracht zijn diensttijd door op de Infanterie-kazerne ,,Borgesius " te Ede. Hij is in 1955 als conservator aangesteld bij het Anatomisch museum van de Kath. Universiteit Nijmegen alwaar hij de anatomische collectie geheel heeft opgebouwd.
