Mies was een fijngevoelige vrouw, die zeer creatief was. Bovendien hield ze veel van klassieke muziek.

Mies hielp haar echtegenoot Hendrik in de kruidenierszaak Hattuma. In 1964 werd de zaak opgeheven, vanwege teveel concurrentie. Twee jaar later is zij gaan werken bij haar zus Liny die een foundationzaak Fellinger had. Later werd de zaak overgenomen door Livera.
Hier is ze blijven werken tot aan haar overlijden.
