    Hij was de tweede zoon van Hermanus Cornelis Cruijff en Petronella Bernarda Draaijer. Johan werd vernoemd naar zijn opa aan zijn moederskant, zijn opa heette namelijk: Hendrik Johannes Draaijer. Moeder noemde Johan vaak 'Jopie'. Johan woonde in Betondorp (Amsterdam), vlakbij Stadion De Meer, dat werd toen door Ajax gebruikt. Johans ouders waren de eigenaar van groentewinkel Cruijffs Aardappelenhandel. Zijn moeder werkte af en toe vrijwillig bij de Ajax-kantine.

    Niet alleen zijn ouders en grootouders werden in Amsterdam geboren, ook zijn acht overgrootouders waren allen afkomstig uit Amsterdam en zijn er ook overleden. Zijn ouders Manus en Nel dreven de groentezaak Cruijffs Aardappelenhandel in Betondorp. Zijn grootvader van moeders kant was diamantbewerker, zijn grootvader van vaders kant veemarbeider en aardappelhandelaar.

    Roken en zijn gezondheid
    OP 26 januari 1991 moest Johan naar het ziekenhuis, hij had plotseling last gekregen van zijn hart tijdens een wandeling met zijn vrouw Danny. Hij bleek aderverkalking te hebben en hij moest worden geopereerd. Hij moest twee maanden rusten en stoppen met roken. Hiervoor was Cruijff altijd goed met gezond eten en drinken, maar hij rookte wel. Na zijn ziekenhuisbezoek stopte hij met roken en werkte mee aan een anti-roken campagne. In plaats van aan een sigaret, zoog Johan nu vaak aan een lolly, en hierdoor werden lolly's erg populair in Catalonië.
    In oktober 2015 kwamen de doktoren erachter dat Johan longkanker had. Een maand voordat Johan stierf schreef hij nog dat hij 2-0 voorstond in de eerste helft van de wedstrijd tegen de ziekte, en dat hij de wedstrijd zou winnen, maar niets bleek minder waar. 2 maart 2016 bezocht Cruijff Max Verstappen nog toen Max in Barcelona was en een week later bezocht hij zijn zoon Jordi op Tel Aviv, maar 24 maart 2016 overleed Cruijff. De wereld was verbijsterd, maar binnen de familie en vriendenkring van Johan was al bekend dat Johan uitzaaiingen had en zou sterven.
