Otto Heldring beschrijft de ellende in december 1845 en jauari 1846 als volgt:" Dertien huisvaders gevonden in ellendige hutten, zonder werk of met half werk. Men at toen driemaal daags boerenkool of knollen, alles zonder brood".
    "Bezocht een strohut van een roomse vroeuw - die vaak tot mij kwam - in een waterpoel gelegen, met een huisgezin van acht kinderen, zonder iets. Het vuur stookte men op natte grond, kinderen lagen er op de buik bij. De brnadstof was een beetje stro".
    Ëen hut gevonden, waar een half onnozele vrouw met twee kinderen in een gat in de grond lag op stro".
