Het virus circuleerde vrijwel jaarlijks onder de bevolking en de meeste mensen kwamen daardoor al op jonge leeftijd met de ziekteverwekker in aanraking. Sinds er in 1974 wordt ingeënt tegen mazelen (de BMR-prik) is het grootste deel van de bevolking immuun.

    Volgens deskundige prof. dr. J. Huisman is er maar één type virus. Wat zijn dan blauwe mazelen?
    Prof. Huisman gaf op deze vraag het volgende antwoord: „Blauwe mazelen is een individuele reactie op de infectie. Er is dan sprake van bloedingen in de huid. Deze complicatie komt sporadisch voor en is afschuwelijk om te zien. Kinderen zitten dan helemaal onder de bloedvlekken. De verschijnselen zijn niet blijvend. Tot dusver zijn bij deze epidemie volgens mij (nog) geen blauwe mazelen gesignaleerd.”
