Bombardement Nijmegen 22 februari 1944

Pauline Hens werd in 1904 in Zwolle geboren in een kunstzinnig gezin. Om financiële redenen moest ze al vroeg een baan zoeken. Ze ging werken bij de Raad van Arbeid in Nijmegen en woonde aan de Pompweg in Ubbergen. In 1937 won ze voor het eerst met eigen literair werk een prijs voor haar meisjesboek 'De kring van Cieltje' en sindsdien werkte ze mee aan diverse jeugdbladen. Maar op 22 februari 1944 werd ze in het centrum van Nijmegen tijdens het grote bombardement door een granaatscherf getroffen en zwaar gewond. Op 26 februari overleed zij op 39-jarige leeftijd aan haar verwondingen, vermoedelijk in het Canisiusziekenhuis. Haar naam staat vermeld op monument aan de Verbindingsweg te Beek.
