Oranje was de stuwende kracht van het universitair verzet.

Biografie
Woonde in Oldekerk, 129d. Zoon van landbouwer Meerten Ritzema (26 april 1864 Leens - 12 januari 1935 Leens) en Anje Kadijk (13 augustus 1863 Baflo - 21 maart 1950 Scheemda). Huwde op 30 augustus 1937 in Scheemda met Heika Aaffiena Haan (26 november 1913 Scheemda - 5 mei 1999 Haren), die ook binnen het verzet actief was. Het echtpaar had drie kinderen. Ritzema bezocht het Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium in Groningen en studeerde vervolgens rechten aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Daarna werd hij volontair op de gemeentesecretarie van Waddinxveen en in 1935 commies bij de gemeente Boskoop. Bij Koninklijk Besluit d.d. 6 april 1939 werd hij benoemd tot burgemeester van de gemeente Oldekerk. Per 1 augustus 1942 nam hij ontslag, omdat hij de Duitse regelgeving principieel niet kon en wilde uitvoeren. Hij vestigde zich daarna als verzekeringsagent en belastingconsulent. Gereformeerd. Lid verzet behorende tot de LO-Oldekerk, de OD en de BS. Zijn verzetskaart vermeldt dat hij onderduikers plaatste, geld inzamelde voor het Nationaal Steunfonds en Trouw en de leiding had in de OD (bedoeld zal zijn plaatselijke OD). In oktober 1944 weigerde Ritzema arbeid voor de Organisation Todt uit te voeren. Dat betrof werkzaamheden die bestemd waren voor de aanleg van verdedigingswerken. Daarom dook hij onder. Op paaszondag 1 april 1945 is hij om 05.00 uur door de SD bij de inval in de boerderij van zijn broer Rentje Ritzema (23 november 1904 Leens) gearresteerd. Volgens de verzetskaart was dat het gevolg van verraad van slager Kooi. Rentje is op zijn eigen erf meteen doodgeschoten. Martinus werd met negen anderen bij de Nije Drintsewei tussen Bakkeveen en Allardsoog door de Nederlandse SD-medewerker Pieter Schaap (18 juni 1902 Zandvoort - geëxecuteerd 29 juni 1949 Groningen) gefusilleerd. Zijn naam staat op een gedenkteken in Bakkeveen, terwijl in Niekerk de Burgemeester Ritzemastraat naar hem is vernoemd. Zoon Meerten heeft over zijn vader de biografie Burgemeester in verzet 1940-1945 geschreven.
