Na ruim vier jaren dienst is hij gedeserteerd van het wachtschip te Willemsoord, waarna hij gearresteerd door de politie, door de Zee-Krijgsraad bij vonnis van 14 september 1861 ter zake van desertie en het verkopen van één zijner kledingstukken is veroordeeld tot laarzen en 14 dagen detentie. Overigens, na dit te zijn ondergaan is hij wel weer in dienst gegaan en heeft hij nog diverse reizen naar Oost- en West-Indië alsmede naar Zuid-Amerika gemaakt.

Uiteindelijk is hij op 15 augustus 1868 uit de Zeedienst ontslagen vanwege ongeschiktheid voor de dienst en uit hoofde van aanhoudend slecht gedrag is aan hem het certificaat van goed gedrag niet uitgereikt.

Daarna heeft hij nog één keer een weinig succesvolle reis gemaakt naar Indië, waarna hij, terug in Nederland, een zwervend bestaan heeft geleid met diverse werkzaamheden in verschillende plaatsen.
