Zowel in persoonlijke aantekeningen van gardisten en hun families als in de annalen van de Franse bezetter vallen de namen van een paar hardnekkige Amsterdamse dienstweigeraars en hun vaders op: Crommelin, Van Halmael, Goll van Frankensteyn en Warin. "Crommelin en zijn zoon naar het Verbeterhuis gebracht, wegens weigering Garde d’Honneurschap. Hun zij hulde!", meldde Daniel Boissevain G. Jzn., vriend van de familie in zijn dagboek. "In die hachelijke tijden was dan ook zulk een openlijk verzet door een voornaam Amsterdammer, lid van de Tribunal de Commerce van politieke beteekenis en niet doorde vingers te zien. Immers het Fransche gezag kon zich alleen handhaven door strengheid. Ten slotte zag dan ook de jonge Claude zich verplicht het uniform aan te trekken, en werd opgestuurd naar Frankrijk." Wegens zijn koppige volharding in het verzet werd de vader van de gardist Arend van Halmael weggevoerd naar Parijs, waar hij tot oktober 1813 gevangen zat. Onder de gardisten zelf bleven enkelen zich verzetten.
