    In maart 1738 sloeg Jan Van Oevelen, in een ruzie om geld en schulden, de pachter van hoeve Vredenberg nabij Hemelrijk, Jan Joosen, met een geweerkolf dood. Vermoedelijk had het zoontje van de moordenaar iets gemerkt. Hij kreeg van zijn vader en afstraffing en overleed eveneens aan de gevolgen ervan. Na een jarenlang proces werd Jan Van Oevelen in 1741 terecht gesteld op de Boterbergen in Kalmthout.
