Zij werd geboren in februari 1864 als Jenneke Kraaij (= Kraai) in het plattelandsdorpje Well, gelegen aan de noordoever van de Maas in het zuiden van het midden van Nederland, dochter van de boeren Aart Kraaij (57 jaar oud) en Amerentia van Strien.

Ze had de volgende zes broers en zussen Kraaij in Well:
* Willem Johannes, geboren op 12 mei 1852;
* Rijk, 11 maart 1854;
* Johannes, 17 mei 1856;
* Aart, 5 juli 1858;
* Johanna, 1 maart 1861;
* Maria Fredrika, 2 juli 1867.

Hun vader Aart Willems Kraaij was in al die jaren boer bij Nou, moeder Amerentia van Strien was in 1858, 1861, 1864 en 1867 ook een boer.

De familie Kraay emigreerde in de tweede helft van 1867 naar de VS.
