John Van Zanten werd geboren in februari 1862 in Cook County, Illinois, zeer waarschijnlijk in Zuid-Holland of Thornton, net ten zuiden van Chicago, zoon van Okke Van Zanten en Janna Vander Kolk Van Zanten. Hij is waarschijnlijk genoemd naar zijn grootvader van moederszijde, wiens naam dan Jan of Johannes van der Kolk zou moeten zijn.

Zijn moeder Janna of Jennie Vander Kolk stierf waarschijnlijk vóór 1866, waarschijnlijk in de bevalling van dochter Jennie, die werd geboren in september 1865. Zijn vader Okke hertrouwde spoedig, zeer waarschijnlijk vóór 1868, met de zeven jaar jongere Marrigje alias Mary Vinke.

Twee huizen verder leefden zijn grootouders, Jacob [Okkes] Vanzanten (59, boer) en Dienke [Dieuwerke] (63). Tussendoor woonde zijn tante Martje (29) met haar man Henry Velt en hun twee kinderen.
