In 1725 werd Joost door kapitein van der Putte beschreven als "een eigenwijs en onverdraaglijk koppig" luitenant.
Joost werd op 20-12-1729 capiteyn ter zee, op 27-11-1755 volgde zijn aanstelling tot schout-bij-nacht.
Van 1755 tot 1757 was Nederland in oorlog met Algerije.
Op 23 november 1757 sloot de schout-bij-nacht Joost Sels vrede.(Schoonheden en merkwaardige tafereelen uit de nederlandsche ..., Volume 8)
In 1759 vertrok een smaldeel van vier schepen onder leiding van schout-bij-nacht Joost Sels naar de west ter begeleiding van koopvaarders gevochten werd er niet, maar er braken hevige ziekten uit waardoor, een groot aantal manschappen
bezweek, zo ook de schout-bij-nacht .
Het vaderland verloor in hem een zeer verdienstelijk officier, zijne krijgsmakkers een hooggeacht en bemind bevelhebber(Geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche zeewezen
