    Wie waren de kinderen die in de jaren 1942-1943 vanuit Rotterdam vertrokken en nooit zijn teruggekeerd? Vanaf de verzamelplaats Loods 24 aan de Rotterdamse Spoorweghaven, ter hoogte van het Poortgebouw aan de Stieltjesstraat, zijn 686 Rotterdamse Joodse kinderen in de leeftijd van één maand tot en met twaalf jaar gedeporteerd naar Westerbork. Met hun namen op een Joods Kindermonument herdenken we hun lot.
    In de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn ruim 100.000 Joodse Nederlanders omgebracht. Joodse mannen, vrouwen en kinderen uit Rotterdam en de Zuid-Hollandse eilanden kregen in 1942 een oproep om zich te verzamelen in Loods 24 op het Stieltjesplein, op het haventerrein op de Kop van Zuid. Van daaruit werden zij per trein naar Westerbork in Drenthe gebracht. De meesten van hen werden daarna per veewagen naar Auschwitz of Sobibor vervoerd om te worden vermoord. Een klein stukje muur, overgebleven van de loods aan de Stieltjesstraat, herinnert vandaag nog aan de verschrikkelijke reis die vanuit deze plaats begon. Bij dit stukje muur worden jaarlijks door de Joodse gemeenschap van Rotterdam alle slachtoffers van de deportaties in de Tweede Wereldoorlog herdacht.
    Van de 15.000 mensen die vanuit Rotterdam zijn gedeporteerd, waren bijna 7000 ingeschreven burgers van de stad; onder hen waren 686 kinderen van één maand tot en met twaalf jaar waarvan wij de namen nog weten.
    Het JomhaSjoa-beraad,organiseert jaarlijks een kerkelijke herdenking in de Laurenskerk.
    De Stichting Joods Kindermonument is opgericht vanuit het JomhaSjoa-beraad.
