Na hun huwelijk in 1909 betrokken Samuël en Esther een woning in de Uilenburgerstraat 88 in de oude Jodenbuurt van Amsterdam, verhuisden in 1910 naar de Korte Houtstraat 6 en naar de Valkenburgerstraat 147, in 1925 naar de Weesperstraat 107 en per 13 November 1936 verhuisde het gezin naar de Lekstraat 10 II in Amsterdam-Zuid en op 18 December 1940 als laatste betrok het gezin een woning in de Vechtstraat 166 II, waar op de 1e etage hun dochter Lena met haar man Hijman Kool en zoontje Max woonden.

Begin September 1942 werden Samuël en Esther naar Westerbork afgevoerd. Zéker is dat Esther Barend-van Ploeg op de transportlijst van 4-5 September 1942 stond, maar dat haar deportatie voor onbekende redenen werd uitgesteld. Zij werd een week later, op 11 September 1942 samen met haar man Samuël Barend naar Auschwitz gedeporteerd en bij aankomst aldaar op 14 September 1942 onmiddellijk vermoord.
