Notes about Salomon van Gelderen

Sal van Gelderen maakt al vóór de oorlog plannen om naar het buitenland te vluchten. Hij is bang voor Hitler en het toenemend antisemitisme. Zijn verloofde mag echter niet mee van haar moeder. Daarom blijft hij in Nederland.
Op 4 april 1943 wordt Sal met zijn schoonmoeder, vrouw en baby van huis gehaald. Per trein worden zij met een grote groep joodse Amsterdammers naar Vught gebracht.

Geboren en getogen in de Amsterdamse jodenbuurt, heeft Sal zijn afkomst nooit verloochend. Zijn vader is lompensorteerder en z'n broer is ook in de zaak. Zelf gaat hij naar de ambachtsschool om een vak te leren. Het wordt electricien-instrumentmaker. Dat zal hem later in Vught goed van pas komen om een plaats te krijgen in het Philips-Kommando.

Salomon, die in Vught achter was gebleven, kwam bij het Philips-commando terecht, dat begin 1944 eveneens naar Westerbork werd gebracht. De directie van Philips slaagde erin een deel van het transport terug te halen naar Vught, waar ook vader deel van uitmaakte. In juni 1944 lukte het de directie echter niet meer om de werkers te beschermen, en de hele groep werd op transport gesteld naar Auschwitz. Na een verblijf van enkele weken in Birkenau werd vader naar Langenbilau gedeporteerd en tewerkgesteld bij de Hagenau-fabrieken in Reichenbach. Hij werd uiteindelijk op 8 mei 1945 bevrijd.
