    Het bevrijdingsmonument in het Julianapark herinnert de inwoners van Schiedam aan alle medeburgers die tijdens de bezettingsjaren door oorlogsgeweld zijn omgekomen en aan de herwonnen vrijheid en vrede.

    Het gemeentebestuur van Schiedam heeft kunstenaar Jan van Luyn de opdracht gegeven het monument te vervaardigen, omdat het oorspronkelijke bevrijdingsmonument ('Het Naakt' van Pieter Starreveld) niet werd aanvaard als officieel gedenkteken. 'Het Naakt' werd 'als ornament' verbannen naar een verscholen hoek in het Julianapark. In de gemeenteraadsvergadering van 27 februari 1967 is dit besluit echter herzien. Het beeld kreeg formeel 'de status van bevrijdingsmonument'. Daarom heeft Schiedam twee officiële bevrijdingsmonumenten.
