(Bron:Wil Schackmann)Jan van Heest is eerst wijkmeester in de vrije koloniën, daarna schrijver der fabriek bij het tweede gesticht te Veenhuizen. Hij en echtgenote Catharina Giebe komen 1823 aan en blijven de rest van hun leven.
de volledige naam van Jan van Heest is Jan Corstiaans van Heest. Verder dat hij het in het leger tot sergeant-majoor heeft geschopt en is gedecoreerd met het 'Kruis van Waterloo', zodat aangenomen mag worden dat hij een rol in die slag gespeeld heeft.
Per 1 maart 1834 verandert Jan van Heest van baan, hij wordt schrijver der fabriek bij het tweede of bedelaarsgesticht te Veenhuizen. Nog steeds op vijf gulden per week.
In 1861 wordt Jan van Heest bevorderd tot magazijnmeester op een jaarwedde van ƒ 312,-. 'Bij resolutie van Z.E. den M.v.BZ den 20 Juny 1862 no 187, 10 afd, werd het tractement verhoogd met 1,02 's weeks en alzoo gebragt op ƒ 365,-'. Ingevolge res. van 2 Nov. 1863 no 287 10 afd teruggesteld tot schrijver op een jaarwedde van ƒ 208,-Bij res. van 20 Dec. 1867 no 229 10 afd werd de jaarwedde verhoogd tot ƒ 260.
